Research - YouTube Killed the MTV Star?

The Internet has turned the music video industry on its head. Online video outlets like YouTube and Google Video have empowered independent labels and artists to promote and distribute their image and music to fans immediately, worldwide, on their own terms.

Unit 29 - The History Of Music Videos

Music videos started in the 1920's with films which had sync sound, this was known as "talkies". The 1920's films first able to use sound and straight away people wanted songs in film.

1930
In the 1930's the talkies progressed into musicals were the stories were told with songs and dance.

1940
artist knew that this was a great way to promote themselves but the only way music was getting watched was on the big screen so in the 40's the Panoram was born. this was a large box with a screen which could be in clubs or restaurants. You would pay to use it and select which video you wanted to watch. So videos were now easier to view but there was only selected videos.

1950
in the 50's the kids wanted something new to listen to which wasn't country music like their parents and rock n roll is what became the big thing.

Early 60's
Top of the Pops was started in 1964 and was broadcasted on the BBC, this was a sucess in England make bands like The Beatles promote themselves with videos meaning they could be on TotP and performing at the same time. The Beatles were inderested in the idea of videos and released "A Hard Day's Night" and Strawberry Fields which could inspiration from soviet montage, with double exposure and filming backwards.

Late 70's
Artist loved the idea of having a music video which could be watched on Top of the Pop because of this the Brits started to release music videos which played with film tecquies.
